Most printers now have dual modes: they can run on both direct thermal and thermal transfer modes. However, in electronic assemblies, the reason that thermal transfer labels and ribbons are used more often than direct thermal labels is because most of the electronics assembly labels need longevity, durability, and at times exposed to high temperatures or sunlight. Direct thermal labels cannot be subjected to these conditions, or otherwise the print will darken and fade over time. In general, direct thermal label prints cannot last more than 1 year and exposed to sunlight and/or high temperatures. This is one of the advantages of thermal transfer over direct transfer types of printing.
