You need cream to make butter and you’re not going to get much from 1 pint of milk. The best way to separate milk and cream is by machine, otherwise let the milk stand until the cream floats to the top, the skim the cream off carefully. To make butter either transfer the cream to a jar with a secure lid and shake it until you get a solid lump (butter) and liquid (buttermilk) or use a whisk. Pour the buttermilk into a container for drinking or using in cooking. Rinse the butter, turn out onto a board and using a couple of wooden spoons or spatulas, flatten, roll up and turn several times to get as much liquid out as possible. If you want to add salt, flatten the butter, roll up, turn several more times to distribute the salt. Form into a block. If I remember rightly 1 pint of cream makes about 1/2 lb butter.
