How do I paint a ceiling?

Step 1

To paint a ceiling, work continuously around the perimeter of the room, and cut in a three- to four-inch wide area at the corners with a paint brush. Smooth out the cut-in area by lightly brushing the tip of the bristles over the newly painted area to create a feathered edge.

Step 2

Next, place a loaded roller in the corner of the room, and roll in one direction toward the opposite side of the room, in parallel lines, Do not roll directly over your head; instead roll in a direction toward yourself.

Step 3

Work quickly and continuously until the entire surface is coated. Do not roll in a “W” or a “V” pattern on the ceiling.  Allow the first coat to dry completely before determining whether a second coat is necessary.

TIP:

If a second coat is needed, apply the additional coat all in one direction, perpendicular to the first coat, working quickly and continuously until the entire surface is coated.

Firstly, ensure that your head is covered with something like a shower cap. Cut in your ceiling, with a paint brush before you use your roller.   Before you begin to roll make sure that there is not too much paint on the roller, otherwise it will splatter everywhere.  Attach your roller onto an extender pole and then carefully stand on your step ladder and begin to paint your ceiling.    It is wise, to invest in an extender pole for your roller.  They are easy to use and attaching the extender pole onto your existing roller is relatively easy to do.
