Prune your cherry trees in winter before the fruit-bearing season. Prune all other cherry trees in summer to avoid diseases.Set up scaffolding if you need to reach tall trees. Clip away dead or obviously diseased branches first. Snip these branches off the tree making the cut near the trunk. Clear out branch clutter from the inside of the tree by snipping away excessive branches inside the tree crown. Snip these off where they meet the trunk.Prune other branches 1/8 of an inch above a healthy bud. Make the angled cut so that water does not collect on the cut.
