The 1988 Buick Electra was equipped with an OBD (onboard diagnostic) system that included self diagnostics that stored trouble codes for retrieval and use during diagnostics. This was an improvement over earlier “Minimum Function” computer systems that only controlled fuel systems and could not store the trouble codes, requiring diagnosis to be completed when the engine was running. You can retrieve the codes in the Electra with an inexpensive scan tool. Turn the ignition key to the “OFF” position and plug the connector on the end of the scan tool cable into the diagnostic port. The diagnostic port on the ’88 Electra is located under the driver side of the dash to the right of the steering column. Clip the battery power wires on the scan tool to the battery terminals using the battery cable adapter or plug the power lead into the cigarette lighter, if it works.
