How do I repair a video cassette tape?
VHS tapes were the industry and consumer standard for recordable visual media for decades. With DVD recordable technology now the new standard, there are far fewer VCR repair technicians available who can fix broken tapes. The technicians may be rare, but you can still fix many tapes yourself.Fix A Damaged CaseIf the case of your video cassette is damaged but the tape appears to be intact, switch the tape to a new case. On most video tapes, there are five Phillips-head screws on the underside of the case, one near each corner and one in the middle. Unscrew these on both the damaged case and two new blank tapes; you’ll use the extra new tape as a visual guide. Carefully remove the tape from one of the blanks and discard. Make sure all other elements inside the case stay where they belong. Remove the tape you want to save from the damaged case, and discard the damaged case. Insert the tape reels from the damaged case into the new case. Be sure to route the tape along the movement heads a
