How do I send commands to the AVR clock using HyperTerminal?

HyperTerminal sends each character typed immediately to the AVR clock, which will prompt you for the next character, if needed. You can always type another X to cancel a command. Please double check that hardware handshaking is turned off because it is the default in HyperTerminal.
