I “glanced” at the answers which directed you to the other links. I really didn’t like the explanations on either link. They were more interested in selling the steel rather than explaining the proper sharpening procedure. I’ll do my best to explain what to do and how to do it. As explained on both links the steel’s purpose is to keep the blade sharp. You need to make the investment in a sharpening stone. It’s not a huge investment. MAYBE it will cost $10 to $15. OR you might be able to buy one at a garage sale or flea market. A sharpening stone is rectangle in shape. It’s about 5″ to 8″ long, about 2″ wide and about 1/2″ to 3/4″ high. It has a course grade of grinding substance on one side and a fine-grade of grinding substance on the opposite side. As far as electrical sharpening stones are concerned, I prefer not to use them.
