How do scientists determine the age of the fossils?
Answer The fossils record is established by using palaeontology. The methods of describing a fossil and its age are key applications of palaeontology. There are two broad methods for fossil’s age determination: Absolute dating and relative dating. Both have been widely used and accepted since last centuries (1700s-till date). All types of fossils dating that are based upon correlation and other in-direct observation/measurements, fall in relative dating. And any direct estimate of fossils record is treated as absolute method of fossils dating e.g. radioactive isotopes dating. Take a look in Figure-2 [1]…kindly see the reference. Notice that how relative measurement of e.g. volcanic eruption/occurrence of fossils would have been used to calibrate the stratigraphic column in geological time scale.
