How do search engines and directories work?
Search Engines are very complex software programs that categorize and locate web sites that relate to the word or words that you enter into the search. Each works a little differently, as each search engine will yield a different group of matches. Some Search Engines also have directory searches in addition to keyword searches. This organizes sites into categories, which allows you to narrow your search from general categories to a specific category with a list of sites that match your needs. Directories are very similar to an “online yellow pages.” Several utilize keywords or “meta tags” that can be put into the HTML coding of your site. For example, someone on the East Coast relocating to San Diego might use a search engine to look up “insurance in San Diego.” If your web site has those keywords built in, and has been registered with that search engine, then your site could possibly be one of the sites found. Not all search engines use keywords, but keywords are just one way to incre
