How do sedative/hypnotics like imovane work as sleeping pills?
i am familiar with imovane, however sedatives/hypnotics work by distinct mechanisms in the brain however do converge onto the same overall outcome. That outcome leads to higher levels of a brain inhitory signal, or stop signal. The brain is filled with “wire connections” which communicate with either stimulate (go ) or inhibit (stop ) signals. So these drugs turn on the stop. Side effects are that too much of hte stop signal can stop the wrong parts of the brain which tell the lungs to breath and heart to pump. Other side effects are that some of these drugs have high abuse potential and can build up a dependence (such as needing to use them every night to go to sleep). Lastly these drugs can be often hazardous when mixed with alcohol or other psychoacting drugs. Only begin taking these medications for sleep distress if it is truely affecting your life. Otherwise i would say more harm than good may come from them.
