How do silencers work on guns?
Firearm silencers work exactly like a straight flow automobile muffler. They are just a tube attached to the muzzle (or telescoping over the barrel) to allow the gun powder gases a larger volume to expand and cool into before being released to the outside environment. Silencers usually range from about 1×6 inches to 3×18 inches depending on what gun they are mounted on. Inside of the tube there are baffles, usually shaped like a cone, but they can also be flat or curved. These baffles interrupt the flow of the gases making them turbulent and delaying their exit from the silencer. A silencer consisting of a tube with one baffle is far superior to one that is just an empty tube (like a soda bottle). A silencer can also have rubber disks called wipes in them. While the wipes are very effective at lowering noise, the wear out in a few dozen shots while a silencer with metal baffles that do not touch the bullet will last thousands of rounds. A silencer made with good baffles will reduce noi
