How do sorting and matching activities help children to learn read write and maths?
Theorists have discussed how children respond to patterns with a mathematical mind. By looking at and arranging patterns such as sorting, matching games playing wiht peg and boards, 3D shapes etc it helps them create a foundation in problem solving, thinking ‘outside the box’ and representing. The representing part is what supports reading and writing. If a children can problem solve, can imagine and respresent things in a way that is meaning ful to them then it begins the mark making and meaningful representations on paper, role play and story time (etc). Children need a basis of experience and a positive attitude within themselves before they can start formal learning.
