How do tribes use their profits?
Since most tribes do not tax their members, they must be able to make money in a different way. Some tribes have been successful in gaming operations, while others have turned to their natural resources. Either way, tribes use their profits to fund critical social programs that no longer receive sufficient funding – i.e., healthcare, education and housing. Additionally, tribes use their profits to buy back tribal lands that have been lost over time. Finally, tribes use their profits to pay members with per capita supplements, similar to dividends in a privately owned business.
