The AFS organization in the United States is known as AFS Intercultural Programs or the American Field Service, but the legal name of the corporation is AFS-USA, Inc., incorporated in the state of Illinois. AFS-USA, Inc. is governed by a board of directors and administered by staff at the national and regional levels. The programs of AFS are administered at the area level by a group of volunteers called the Area Leadership Team and at the local level by volunteers who are organized into chapters, committees, school clubs or other affiliate groups the generic term local team is broadly used. However, a local team that becomes a chapter has special responsibilities. Regional and National Volunteer Councils review AFS activities and practices and work with staff to enhance the growth and quality of AFS in their respective regions and throughout the organization.
