How do view the role of contemporary poets in Kashmiri music?
Poetry makes the song. But in the contemporary times it has become a hurdle in promotion of Kashmiri songs. I have strong reservations with the poets of Kashmir who have been acclaimed and awarded. The poetry they do is understood only by them. I mean the language which is pure Kashmiri is so difficult to understand. What is the fun of such poetry which is confined to Mushairas. There are poets who have received many prestigious awards but a common Kashmiri don’t even know their names. What is the fun of such poetry that benefits only the poets? I salute those local poets whose songs are sung at least at the marriage functions. People know them and identify themselves with them and on the other hand there are people who are known to the whole country but are alien to their own people.
