An automatic transmission typically has a conventional dipstick and filler tube. A manual transmission has a filler plug on the side of the transmission. You add fluid through the dipstick tube or the filler plug, depending on your transmission type. Park the car on level ground. Start the engine and idle the car for at least 1 minute. Apply the parking brake. Apply and hold the foot brake. At the same time, select each gear momentarily, ending with selector lever in park. Wipe the dipstick and surrounding area clean so that no dirt enters the transmission. Remove the dipstick and touch it to determine if the transmission fluid is hot or warm. If you cannot hold it comfortably between your fingers, the fluid is hot. Wipe the dipstick with a clean rag and place it back in the tube until fully seated.
