Here is the low down on how to adjust the front sight post on the M16. Clear the weapon, make sure there are no rounds chambered and that the magazine is removed. Rotate the selector lever to the "safe" position. Many people do not but is a very good practice as far as firearms safety is concerned. Once the weapon is safe determine according to the shot cluster (where your rounds hit) whether you need to adjust the sight post up or down. If you are aiming for center mass with each round and the shot cluster is around the head then you need to adjust it down. Adjust the sight up if your cluster is lower than your aim mark. Use the sight post tool to adjust the post. If a tool is not available you can use a nail by pushing the nail down on the sight post lock and turning the post with the point end of the nail by pushing the sight post notch to either side in accordance with the need to go up or down.
