Black lacquer will give you a beautiful finish, but it can be more difficult to apply that other finishes. Each coat of lacquer melts and binds with the coat beneath it, so more is not necessarily better, as you can make a mess of the finish with the addition of material. Lacquer can be either sprayed or applied with a brush. Spraying is easier, but few people have the equipment. A lot of sprayed lacquer flies off the mark, so you need a protected and well-ventilated area for spraying. You can achieve excellent results from brushing on black lacquer. Purchase lacquer that is made specifically for brushing, as it is formulated differently than the spray version. Thoroughly clean the surface you are working on. Allow it to dry. Dip the brush into the lacquer to load it. Apply the lacquer in smooth, long strokes to the surface. Avoid the temptation to brush back and forth. Take your time to ensure full coverage.
