The M16/AR15 rifle is the longest serving rifle in U.S. military history. Developed by Eugene Stoner in the late 1950s, the first M16s were placed in service by the U.S. Air Force in 1961. Since that time, the M16/AR15 rifle has gone through four basic models. The original M16 was followed by the A1, the A2 in the 1980s and the A3 in the late 1990s. Additionally, the M16/AR15 has had three carbine models used, the XM117, the CAR15, and most recently, the M4. Assembly and dis-assembly is the first thing most soldiers learn about this weapon when the soldiers are in training. Ensure that the weapon is unloaded and cleared. Remove the magazine by pressing the magazine release on the side of the weapon and watch the magazine fall clear of the magazine well. Grasp the charging handle at the rear of the receiver and draw it forcefully rearward. Visually inspect the chamber to ensure that it is clear. Locate the retaining pin on the side of the receiver, above the pistol grip of the weapon. P
