How do you attach fiberglass batts to steel studs?
Denny writes from Winfield, Illinois: “I live in the western suburb of Chicago, Ill. I’m finishing my basement using metal studs. Due to circumstances the wall is about 4 inches away from the concrete walls, what kind of insulation should I use and if you recommend fiberglass batts, how would you attach it to the steel studs?” Answer: I have a couple recommendations for your consideration. One is to start with FOAMULAR® insulation on the exterior side of the metal studs, then insulation with paper facing inside the stud cavities and finally a fire-rated material such as drywall on the interior. Also, you could put a fire-rated material on both sides with Fiberglas™ insulation in between. The insulation should be self supportive enough to hold itself in place until the fire-rated material is applied.
