• Consider alternative forms of transportation that do not require driving or taking public transit that shares the road. These include walking, riding a bike, taking public transportation or riding the train. • Determine the route that you will take before hand. Identify time periods when these roads have the most activity. • For example, expressways in Chicago start to get busy around 5:30am for morning rush. Morning rush tends to end by 8:45 on expressways. Many areas high schools exacerbate traffic problems as students try to get into and leave school. • For example, traffic backs up roads near highschools around 8am and again around 3pm. • Consider taking side roads or alternate routes. Be aware of road construction as people using those routes may overwhelm them and actually make them slow. If you’re stuck in traffic, find a traffic radio station. You may be able to hear about alternate routes, or know how long you might be sitting in your car.
