How Do You Become A Gymnastics Judge?
Most people who judge gymnastics are former gymnasts themselves or have children who are gymnasts. USA Gymnastics is responsible for the testing and certification of judges through an organization called Judges Certification, Inc. The National Association of Women’s Gymnastics Judges oversees these judges. Entry-level judges can only judge compulsory gymnastics, in which each competitor performs the same routine. As judges gain experience and move up in ratings, they can judge optional gymnastics, meaning that the gymnasts and their coaches have designed routines that include required skills as dictated by the level of competition. Find your Regional Judging Director (RJD) and State Judging Director (SJD) by going to the National Association of Women’s Gymnastics Judges website (www.nawgj.org), clicking on “Directory-Regional/State” and then clicking on the region in which your state is located. Contact your RJD and/or your SJD, who can provide you with information on certification rul
