If you want to offer electrical, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration and hydronics services in the state of Ohio, you need to hold a contractor's license through the Ohio Department of Commerce. To obtain a license, you must apply and pass an examination. Specialized licenses may be required in addition to the general license. Step 1 Complete the License Qualification application. Contact the Ohio Department of Commerce's Ohio Construction Industry Examining Board (OCIEB) to obtain a formal application. You can download the applicatoin from the OCIEB's website (see Additional Resources). Attach your union card, W-2s, invoices, letters of recommendation, and verification of employment on company letterhead to this document. Step 2 Have your application notarized.
