As a former English major, Shakespeare will forever haunt me. I took a Shakespeare class as a complete novice in his works (outside of Romeo & Juliet) and had trouble thinking of essay topics to write. Here is a short guide to brainstorming some essay topics for Shakespeare if, you too, are having trouble. Consider the work(s) that you intend to write about and jot down major themes. Note that Shakespeare wrote about a lot of overarching themes in his texts, such as: relationships between men and women, religion, class differences, familial relationships, etc… Consider one theme and think to yourself: What is Shakespeare saying about [fill in the blank]? This doesn’t have to be correct or incorrect – bringing new insight into Shakespeare is, I hope, encouraged by your professor.
