A pinewood derby car can be fun and easy to build and design, or grueling, taking hours to manufacture. The difference depends on your competitiveness. Starting out with a design and a few cuts to a wooden block is the best way to begin a hobby in pinewood derby cars. Be sure to wear protective goggles when making the car, and avoid melting lead to add weight to the car, as some tutorials unwisely suggest. Buy your pinewood derby set, which includes the block of wood, the axles for the wheels, and the wheels themselves. Most hobby stores carry them. Think up a design for the car. Don’t spare your imagination. Keep in mind, though, that the more complicated the design, the more cuts to the block you’ll need. Draw the design on the car with a pencil and cut the block according to the design. Be sure to put the block in a vise for best stability. Depending on the complexity of the cuts, use a hand saw, coping saw, or band saw. Shape your car with a rasp. Hold the rasp as though it were a
