How Do You Build A Split Rail Gate?
The type of split rail gate you build depends largely on the material used to construct the fence. Some split rail fences require gates that are no more than rails positioned in the posts on either side of the gate. The gate opens by sliding the rails through holes cut in the posts. You can also nail rail material to the posts to make a gate. Place the 4-by-4-by-96-inch posts on a worktable. Measure from one end and make a mark 2 inches shorter than the fence posts. Place the tri-square on the mark and draw a line across the width of the post. Cut the posts with the circular saw. Place the rail material (matches the material in the fence) on the worktable. Measure from one end and make a mark 2 inches narrower than the gate opening. Cut as many pieces as necessary for the gate with the circular saw. Place the rail material on the posts.
