Wood-fired hot tubs have a number of advantages over traditional hot tubs. They are less expensive and easier to construct: any sufficiently skilled person can put one together with the right equipment. They’re also safer than other do-it-yourself hot tubs because they don’t require electricity–a significant factor whenever water is involved. Building a wood-fired hot tub still takes an effort–you’ll need the better part of a weekend to put it all together–but it can make an enjoyable addition to the right household. Line the walls of a steel or plastic container (your tub) with polystyrene packaging and secure it into place with glue or temperature-resistant sealant. Place similar packaging beneath the floor of your tub. You can also use foam camping mattresses or thermal blankets, provided you are confident they can withstand high temperatures of 200 degree or so.
