Decomposed granite is a popular material for use in hardscaping. It’s very suitable for uses in walkways–it’s durable, attractive and easy to work with. The preparatory steps of preparing the surface, border and underlayment all contribute the success of your project. Dig the soil out of the ground to a depth of six inches, matching the course and width of your walkway. Move the excess soil as you dig by loading it into a wheelbarrow and taking it away. Lay landscape cloth onto the bottom of your walkway excavation, covering the entire base of the walkway. Overlap pieces of landscaping cloth by several inches when its necessary to add another piece. Pour gravel into the walkway excavation and rake it smooth to a depth of three inches. Place walkway borders along the edge of the walkway, with the tops of the borders flush with the ground.
