Building a downtown business district and a surburban community with roadways, hills and parks can be a lot of work, but it is a rewarding hobby. Plan the model railroad layout. Measure the available area for the track layout and surrounding landscaping, and then determine the features that can be added within the space restrictions. Obtain plywood that fits the area. Allow access space around the layout for future additions or changes to the layout, or to provide routine maintenance to tracks, trains and other objects.
