Cobblestone alleyways that wind around silver shops make Taxco a stunning city to visit. The city sits on top of silver mines that were discovered in the 16th Century. The Catedral de Santa Prisca dominates the hilltop with faded rose stone presenting a Baroque facade. Silver is the big attraction with shops at every turn. Worth seeing are: * The Museo Spratling, named for the American who revitalized Taxco and its silver industry in the 1930s. * El Mercado de Artesanias with over 300 silver shops which are only open on Saturday. * Silver shops open every day around the zocalo at the cathedral. * Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, a series of caves filled with unusual rock formations. * The Ex-Convento de San Bernandino, a former Franciscan monastery built near the end of the 16th Century. * The cable car (teleferico) to Hotel Monte Taxco for a sweeping view of the city.
