How Do You Calculate How Much Fabric For A Quilt?
The size of a quilt backing is determined by the dimensions of the top. A quilt back for a large quilt must be sewn together from several lengths of cloth. Calculations must be made for yardage from the length and from the width to find the smallest amount of fabric needed. Lay your quilt top out smooth and flat on a table. Measure the length of the quilt by measuring from the center of the top edge to the center of the bottom edge. Write the measurement down. Measure the width of your quilt top by measuring from the center of one side edge to the center of the opposing side edge. Write the measurement down. Divide the width measurement by 40-inches and round up to the next whole number. Divide the length measurement by 40-inches and round up to the next whole number. Write both of these numbers down. Add 6-inches to the length measurement of your top and multiply that number by the whole number deduced from the width measurement in the step 3. Convert to yards by dividing by 36. Add 6
