How Do You Calculate Square Yards From Square Feet?

Remodeling is a general nightmare, but sometimes the worst part is the details. Rooms are measured in square feet, but many flooring materials like carpet, vinyl and even concrete are sold by the square yard. How do you figure out how much you need? Most people, when asked how to get square yards from square feet, would answer, “Multiply by three”—but the opposite is true. There are more feet than yards in a given area, so to calculate yards from feet, you need to divide. Measure the width of your area. For our purposes, we will imagine a room that is 10 feet wide. Measure the length of the area in question. We’ll say that the room is 18 feet long. Figure out the number of square feet you are working with by multiplying the area’s length by its width. Using our imaginary room, that would be 10 feet x 18 feet = 180 square feet. Divide that number by 9, because there are 9 square feet in every square yard. 180 square feet divided by 9 = 20 square yards.
