A hip roof is one of the most popular residential roofing styles. Although it is more difficult to construct than a flat or gable roof, it minimizes exterior wall space and more evenly drains water to the building’s perimeter. Calculate the area of a hip roof to determine the quantity of shingles required for reroofing, the amount of thermal insulation necessary to meet building codes, or to calculate heat loss or gain data necessary to determine the size of a new furnace or air conditioning system. Sketch the configuration of the roof as it would be seen from above. Show the building perimeter, ridge lines, hip lines and valley lines. Number each facet of the roof as defined by these lines.
