How Do You Celebrate Christmas In Poland?
Christmas is celebrated all over the world–from Canada to Argentina, from the U.K. to Japan, from Finland to South Africa. There are several unique ways in which the Poles observe the event. If you might find yourself in Poland over the holidays and want to fit in, read on. Take a walk into Old Town (most towns and cities in Poland have one) and enjoy the nativity scene you will find there. These often feature live actors, and are quite complex in design. Begin fasting the morning of Christmas Eve. Continue to fast until the first star of evening is visible, then get ready to feast. (See Step 3.) Enjoy a grand feast with your loved ones. Eat well! Exchange gifts. If you have children, mark some of the gifts as being from Saint Nicholas (“Swiety Mikolaj” in Polish). Attend Christmas mass at midnight in a local church.
