When it comes time to change your shower drain, you will need to figure out what type of drain you have. A foot lock drain has its settings changed by the use of your foot. A roller ball drain has a plug on top that is pushed down to keep in water and pulled up to drain. A lift and turn drain has a plug on top which is turned one way to keep in water and the other to drain. A plunger is a type of drain which is automatic and stops water on its own. If the drain is a foot lock or roller ball drain, just rotate the drain with your hand counterclockwise until it comes free. Replace with the new drain by rotating clockwise until it is in position. With a lift and turn drain, lift up the drain plug. Loosen the screws which are found under the drain and remove the plug entirely. Unclog the drain if necessary.
