How Do You Choose A Quilt Fabric Scale?
Choosing the fabrics to be used in a quilt is often a difficult operation for the beginning quilter. A few guidelines will help the novice quiltmaker choose fabrics for a quilt that will enhance the pattern design. One fabric characteristic that must be taken into account is the print scale. Most print scale choices are determined by the size of the pattern piece and the final look the quiltmaker is trying to achieve. Choose small scale fabric for smaller pattern pieces. Tone-on-tone small scale prints work well for backgrounds and will look like solid color fabrics from a distance. Use medium scale prints for moderate size pattern pieces. Use large scale tone-on-tone prints for background pieces. Large scale multicolor prints will add motion and complexity to a quilt. Demi-prints are occasionally available.
