AC units are a great way to stay cool during hot and humid summer days. They pull hot air out while replacing it with cool, dry air. The only problem is that the circulation of air also circulates dust, hair and other airborne dirt that can build up on the AC coils. Air-conditioning units have two types of coils: evaporator coils, also referred to as “indoor coils,” and condenser coils, also referred to as “outdoor coils.” Remove the grille that covers the condenser coils on the outside unit. The condenser coils are generally visible, and look like tightly packed thin strands of metal. Use a hose vacuum attachment to vacuum across the coils to remove any loose dust and other debris. Gently bring the end of the hose back and forth over the coils. You can also use a can of compressed air to complete this step, but this may also push debris further into the system.
