Brass is a material that was used more frequently in the past as hardware for cabinets, desks and other furniture. Although hardware comes in many more finishes these days, brass still lends a distinctive look when it is used. Brass can deteriorate over time and tarnish due to exposure to ultra violet rays, chemicals and air pollutants among other things. Whether you need to restore modern or antique brass hardware, there is a method that will bring it back to its bright and shiny finish. Remove the lacquer from the brass by applying paint stripper to it and then rubbing it with extra-fine steel wool. Use a brass polish on the hardware according to the manufacturer’s directions. Brasso and Noxon are two well-known brass polishes. Apply a nonabrasive polymer car wax to the brass hardware. Rub it in well and allow it to dry to a haze.
