You’ve installed your ceramic tiles yourself, and now you’re ready to lay the grout lines and finish the job. Grouting tile is a messy job, which brings us to the question: How do you clean excess grout off ceramic tiles? The answer is: very carefully. By doing a meticulous job of cleaning as you grout, you will save yourself a lot of grief by not having to scrub dried grout off your tiles after the job has dried. Grout your ceramic in a three-foot-square area at a time. As you lay the grout line, wipe off the excess with your putty knife until the section is finished. Dip a grout sponge into a bucket of water and wring it out slightly. Wipe down the ceramic tiles where you just laid the fresh grout, working up to but not on the grout line itself. Rinse the sponge often to prevent buildup. Continue to work in three-foot sections, first laying grout and then wiping off the excess, until the job is finished.
