Cleaning your inground pool sand filters is done through a process called backwashing. It is necessary to backwash the sand filters periodically but doing it too often is counterproductive. Dirty sand filters actually filter more effectively than clean sand filters. Various factors contribute to the frequency in which you should backwash your filter such as the size of the filter and how often it is used. The best indicator is to check the pressure reading. Read the manufacturer’s directions to find out at what level the filter should be backwashed. Turn the filter system off. Switch the filter valve to the “Backwash” setting. Open the backwash gate if you have one. Some systems require attaching a collapsible backwash hose to the waste port.
