How Do You Clean Rust Off Of A Painted Concrete Driveway?
Before you spend time removing rust from your cement driveway, determine where the rust is coming from and remove the source. Common causes of rust include cars, bikes or tools sitting in the driveway in wet conditions. Nails or even patio furniture may also cause rust. Old rain gutters may deposit iron along with rain water on your cement driveway. Don the rubber gloves before beginning, as oxalic acid is highly corrosive. Follow all package directions. Mix 1 lb. oxalic acid with 1 gallon hot water in a plastic bucket. Don’t use a metal bucket or metal implements, as the acid will react to them, causing pitting. Dip a scrub brush in the acid mixture and apply the mixture to the stains. Scrub until the rust stains are gone. Rinse the area thoroughly to remove all traces of oxalic acid. Take care when washing the acid away because it can kill plants and trees. Allow the cement to dry overnight. Sand away any rough edges where the acid has eaten the paint away.
