Hot tub pump impellers pull in water from the hot tub and push the water back out through the impellers and hot tub jets, forming the massaging jet streams and bubbles while you sit back and soak. Soaps, lotions and body oils from the bathers as well as hard water lime deposits build up on the impellers, causing the dark, flaky residue you sometimes see floating in the hot tub. To get rid of this buildup, employ a few inexpensive cleaning ingredients. Pour 1/4 cup dishwasher detergent powder and 1/2 cup bleach into the hot tub while the jets are running at full speed. Let the detergent and bleach combination work its way through the impellers and jets for 15 minutes. The detergent breaks up all of the soap scum, and the bleach dissolves the lime. Drain the hot tub, and refill the tub with hot water. Turn on the jets again, and let them run for 15 more minutes. Drain the hot tub once more to get rid of any leftover residue. Repeat once per month, or as needed to keep buildup at a minimu
