How Do You Clean Tarnished Silver Jewelry With Lipstick?

When I was in college, a friend of a friend showed me a trick to polish silver jewelry using only lipstick and a piece of tissue. If you love silver jewelry, you know that one of the characteristics of this beautiful metal is its tendency to tarnish. Silver polishes can be used to get rid of the tarnish. But what can you do if you’re in a pinch, or if you have allergic sensitivities to commercial silver polish? Fold the piece of tissue until it is about 4 layers thick. Take your lipstick, and scribble an area about the size of a half-dollar onto the the center of the tissue. Rub your tarnished silver with the lipstick spot until the black has transferred from your jewelry onto the lipsticked tissue. If your silver is especially tarnished, take another tissue and repeat steps 1, 2, and 3. Buff the jewelry with the clean section of the tissue to remove any lipstick residue.

When I had to clean my tarnished silver necklace, I think I tried five different ways. A friend of mine told me that if I wet a cotton pad with egg yolk and apply it to the surface of the silver necklace, and leave it dry and then rinse it off, the chain will be cleaner than when I bought it. However, it didn’t work out. Then, I read online that toothpaste might work as well. Guess what? It didn’t. In the end, even though I was skeptical about using lipstick, I decided to give it a go. Basically, you only have to take an old lipstick and apply it to that piece of jewelry and wipe it all away until it’s squeaky-clean. I love cleaning my sterling silver jewelry from time to time, and I think it’s a must for every jewelry lover.
