The winter season will bring ice and snow to your sidewalks and outside steps. They need to be cleared frequently to prevent injury, and unfortunately, lawsuits. It’s easy to do and the tools are very basic and obtainable. If possible, stage your treatment (salt, ice melt) and scraper and or shovel at the doorway you usually exit from. This will put the tools you need right where you need them most. By having your tools at the house entrance, you can start treatment without having to walk over the hazard to the garage or tool shed. It’s safer this way. If removing ice, put down the salt or melt first. It will burn through the ice within a few minutes and will usually make it easier to work with the scraper or shovel. Let it sit for a few minutes after treatment. The thicker the ice, the longer it may take and the more you will use.
