Most of us hope to never see the inside of a courtroom. But as a consumer, we may need to use small claims court to resolve an issue, such as with a dentist. Whether it’s a matter of poor service that needs refunded or money owed if a dentist makes a situation worse, a claim can be filed if a patient is unable to resolve the matter satisfactorily with the dental practice. This legal process usually handles claims between $3,000 and $5,000, but some states allow higher maximums, with a couple allowing claims up to $15,000. One or both parties can file a claim with the local clerk of courts for a nominal fee, usually less than $100. The individual filing the claim, or plaintiff, files a Statement of Complaint against the other party, or defendant, explaining the grievance.
