How Do You Collect Pink Halite Crystals From Gem-O-Rama?

0

Every year on the second weekend of October, there is a wonderful event called Gem-O-Rama. Held in the tiny Mojave town of Trona, California, Gem-O-Rama is a gem & mineral show as well as three field trips to collect minerals. The third and last field trip of Gem-O-Rama is to a site on Searles Lake were collectors are allowed to collect pink halite crystals from pools of saltwater. For this field trip you need to prepare to get dirty and wet and soaked with extremely salty water. Wear old clothes you don’t want over a bathing suit and with older shoes. Old sneakers work great. Shoe soles will be torn apart by the rough ground so don’t wear a pair you really love. Some people wear rubber boots and others use hip waders. Wear whatever you’ll be comfortable in. I don’t suggest denim though, since it can really irritate your skin when it gets saturated with saltwater. To go collect pink halite, also known as rock salt, mineral specimens at the pink halite field trip you need to go to Trona
