Creating your own flagstone walkway may seem like a daunting task, but all it takes is a little imagination, planning and the right tools and supplies. Decide how long you want to the walkway to be and in what shape. Lay the hose along path as an outline of how wide and long you want the walkway. Install the edging along the lines created by the hose. Dig out the area of the walkway to an even 2 1/2 inches deep. Flatten the area as much as possible to create an even surface. Cover the area with 1 1/2 inches of sand or pea gravel on the walkway and smooth it out. The sand or pea gravel should reach all the way to the edging. Place the pieces of flagstone in the desired positions. To raise or lower the flagstones, add or remove some sand or pea gravel to achieve the desired height.
