How Do You Cultivate Hosta Seeds?
Hostas, also known as plantain lilies, are low-growing bushy perennials with large heart-shaped leaves. Once a year they bloom with delicate light purple or white flowers that tower over the plant on delicate stems. During the winter they wither to nothing but roots, but spring back quickly in the warm weather months, often doubling in size over the course of a year. Established plants can be purchased at nurseries during the spring and early summer, however they are most economically grown from seed. Their seeds can be started indoors over the winter. Locate a draft-free space to set up your planting tray if you are starting your seeds indoors. You will need either unfiltered sunlight from a window or a fluorescent plant light if no natural light is available. Make sure the space is one free from the paths of pets or small children who may disturb it.
