How Do You Cut Existing Ceramic Tile?
You have a lovely bathroom or kitchen with glossy ceramic tile, and you discover that you need to cut a section or drill a hole for a fixture to fit. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are often as hard as stone and equally challenging to cut. Normal drill bits or saw blades simply won’t cut tile. But, with the right tools and patience, you can cut your existing tiles to fit your needs. Position tape over the ceramic tile exactly where the cut will be made. The tape helps in stabilizing the tile edge to prevent chipping. Use the Sharpie to draw a straight line or circle onto the tape. For a circle, be sure to also mark the exact center. Tape plastic sheeting over any adjacent areas to protect them from silicate dust. In rooms with doors, close the doors, and prevent any small children or animals from entering the room during the cutting and cleanup. For rooms without doors, tape sheeting over the doorway to contain the silicate dust. Position a ventilation fan blowing toward an open window. H
